"Chess Kombat" is minigame similar to classic chess. Each piece type is represented by a character of the player's choosing. As with regular chess, the quantity and movement of each piece is determined by their rank. The game can only end when one player takes the other team's 'Champion' (or King in traditional chess). The biggest difference is that all attempts to take a square are literally contested. Players will engage in one round of combat, with the winner taking the square.
Besides Midway Games and Ed Boon, several other designers, artists, and writers contributed to the game, including Paulo Garcia, Brian LeBaron, Steve Beran, Martin Stoltz, and Pav Kovacic.
In the story explored in Konquest mode, a young man named Shujinko is deceived (hence the game's title) into spending his life collecting the Kamidogu for Onaga, who uses the guise of an emissary of the Elder Gods named Damashi . This is prior to Onaga's resurrection in the body of Reptile . Onaga only reveals his identity and intentions after Shujinko has gathered all the Kamidogu. Shujinko, led to believe he was working for the greater good, joins the others opposing Onaga.
