The orchestra, under Gavin Sutherland, were in excellent fettle. With live music, communication between the pit and the dancers is vital, and Sutherland, positioned between dancers and orchestra, was often half-turning to ensure all was in sync. The only time things broke down was in the Act 3 ballroom scene, where it looked like part of the set stopped Sutherland from seeing the dancers, and the timing of soloist final finishes was sadly adrift of the music. But this is nit-picking, really - the Deane Swan Lake is a magical goody and well worth catching before the run ends on 23 June.

Act IV allows a brief return to the lake for a final look at those shimmering swans. This is where a broad brush approach to the storytelling pays off, because there isn’t much that needs to be explained here. We can watch the swans bourrée into different patterns (under the gentle rumble of pointe shoes) and stoically flap their wings before Odette and Siegfried are reunited in a last dramatic stand-off with Rothbart in a captivating finale.

Long-necked Cuban Osiel Gouneo is an elegant Prince Siegfried giving great support to his partner with lifts that emphasis the fluidity of Alina Cojocaru’s Odette. This is a sensitive prince, giving a moment of kindly approval to the princess his mother offers to choose from. He exudes joy in the jetés and tours of act 3 when he believes he is going to marry his swan love, a picture of pain when realises what has actually happened.
