Eventually William “Bill” Lear, a former used car salesman, saw a way in which he could improve upon the Stereo-Pak, eventually expanding it to a “Stereo 8” eight-track cartridge, which could provide up to 90 minutes of content. Ampex and RCA Victor showed interest, as did automotive giants such as Motorola, Ford and GM. Launching in 1965, the 8-track soon became a must have, with most every new model of Ford offering 8-track players by the following year. This new standard-bearer was a hit.
The 8-track took a large proportion of the music market in the late 1960s and peaked in the mid-1970s. Although it was a compromise in terms of sound quality, it required only one hand and minimal accuracy to insert into or remove from the players, which themselves were designed for extreme simplicity of operation. Once in the machine, the tape played automatically and required no rewinding. In terms of responsible engineering, the 8-track’s design was a wise attempt at avoiding the introduction of an accessory that distracted the driver. At the end of its life in the early 1980s, it became the butt of jokes; a symbol of obsolescence and 70s tackiness.
The 8-track had many problems. Unlike cassettes, the rubber roller was in the cartridge . It would often wear out, or chemically break down. This could cause a gooey substance in the tapes. This happened faster if the cartridge was left in a hot car. This also caused the tapes to wear out quickly. The spacing between the tracks were very narrow. Music from tracks other than the one being played could often be heard. The sensing foil in the tape would sometimes break off. This would stop the tape from changing tracks.
