Lors de la première journée, les élèves assistent au premier cours de Lockhart, mais celui-ci se retrouve rapidement dépassé et se révèle incompétent. Plus tard, Harry assiste à un incident entre Hermione et Drago lorsque ce dernier l'insulte en la traitant de " Sang-de-Bourbe ". Ron réagit, mais sa baguette cassée retourne son sort de "crache limace" contre lui. Le trio se rend chez Hagrid le temps que le sort de Ron s'estompe. Hagrid explique à Harry que les sorciers des familles "pures", comme celle des Malefoy, considèrent que les enfants de Moldus, comme Hermione, sont indignes, et les surnomment "Sang-de-Bourbe".
Harry is blamed for the incident once Dobby Disapparates , and Uncle Vernon shoos the shocked Masons into the dining room while Harry cleans up, promising to deprive the boy of an inch of his life. The evening is almost saved until an owl from the Ministry of Magic is promptly received (scaring away Mrs Mason , who is mortally afraid of birds) with a warning saying that Harry has violated the Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery , though he is not actually punished (possibly because it is only his first offence). After realising that Harry is not allowed to do magic outside of Hogwarts grounds, Uncle Vernon locks Harry in his room . Vernon reasons that if Harry uses magic to get himself out, he will be expelled anyway.
After another attack from the monster, students attend a defensive duelling class. During the class, Harry displays the rare ability to speak Parseltongue , the language of snakes. Moaning Myrtle , a ghost who haunts a bathroom, shows Harry and his friends a diary that was left in her stall. It belonged to Tom Riddle , a student who witnessed another student's death when the Chamber was last opened. During the next attack by the monster, Hermione Granger is petrified.
The Chamber was later repurposed. Slytherin initially co-existed peacefully with the three other founders, but as time passed, he became increasingly adamant about his disapproval of the acceptance of Muggle-borns at Hogwarts. Unable to sway the other Hogwarts founders about the matter, Slytherin left the school. However, before he left, Slytherin made the Chamber home to a monster — a Basilisk — a creature that only those of Slytherin's bloodline could command. It was allegedly supposed to purge the school of all those who, in Slytherin's view, were unworthy to study the magical arts, Muggle-borns. Slytherin had sealed the Chamber and only the Heir of Slytherin could open it through the use of Parseltongue . Slytherin knew this would keep everyone else out.
Despite the skepticism of many, the legend left a lasting mark on Hogwarts. The fear of Slytherin’s heir and the prejudice against Muggle-borns persisted, contributing to an undercurrent of tension within the school.
