Als eine von 17 deutschen Spitzenuniversitäten und zwei Universitätsverbünden konnte die CAU im Zuge der Exzellenzstrategie des Bundes und der Länder zwei Cluster einwerben: Präzisionsmedizin für chronische Entzündungserkrankungen („Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation“, PMI) und „ROOTS – Konnektivität von Gesellschaft, Umwelt und Kultur in vergangenen Welten“. Sie werden bis Ende 2025 mit rund 100 Millionen Euro gefördert.

The CAU is embedded in an international network of scientific, cultural, political and economic contacts and partnerships. This way, the University became a vibrant member of the scientific community and the society, which provide important impulses for CAU's productive development in return.
The Central Unit: Safety Engineering advises and supports supervisors, managers and employees at the CAU in matters related to occupational safety.
Kiel University’s four priority research areas (KMS - Kiel Marine Science, KLS - Kiel Life Science, SECC - Societal, Environmental and Cultural Change, KiNSIS - Kiel Nano Surface & Interface Science) enable close interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration between different research fields on shared core topics. The priority research areas are also interlinked with one another and closely related to the CAU’s eight faculties.
