William Miller, a Baptist lay preacher living in Upstate New York began to preach in 1833 that Jesus was coming soon. The materials in this collection represent the growth, expansion and final disappointment of what became to be known as the Millerite Movement.
According to the popular teachings of his time, Miller thought the sanctuary symbolized the earth. The cleansing, then, must be the fire that would cleanse the earth at Jesus Christ’s Second Coming .
The Bible Student movement had connections at the very beginning (in the early 2nd half of 19th century) with the Millerite movement. Charles Taze Russell later stated that "I confess indebtedness to Adventists as well as to other denominations". In light of this, the Bible Student Movement was influenced by Adventists roots, but did not emerge from the Millerism movement. [ 48 ] Followers of the Baháʼí Faith also credit Miller's analysis of the time of Christ's return. Baháʼís believe that, although William Miller's understanding of the location and method of Christ's return was not accurate, his calculation of the timing was entirely correct. Many Adventist sects emerged from the movement, including Seventh Day Adventists . [ 50 ]
