The success of Grand Theft Auto III in 2001 brought about a number of open-world imitators, but few of those early attempts dared to capture a real-life city. Sony's The Getaway was a planned launch title for the PlayStation 2, but was delayed for more than two years as the developers needed the extra time to bring the streets of London to life. Using a dual narrative, The Getaway showcases both the criminal and law enforcement sides of the same story, while its gameplay is more cinematic than gamified. It even spawned a sequel, but the less we say about that, the better.

It’s very interesting that while Resident Evil was near the height of its popularity Capcom opted to release an entirely original survival horror game for the PS2. This is Haunting Ground, and it’s more frightening than anything else they’ve released. That’s saying a lot given the developer’s pedigree. Here you play as a young girl trapped in a dilapidated castle. You gather keys, items, and solve puzzles like in Resident Evil, but combat is entirely different. The thing is the protagonist cannot really fight back. She must hide instead of fight. The enemies will search for her and give chase. Bear in mind Haunting Ground released in a time when this wasn’t really a widespread concept in video games.
Players control the titular Ico, a horned boy who finds Princess Yorda trapped in a castle. Together, they must find a way to escape, with Ico fighting off monsters to protect Yorda, Yorda helping Ico solve puzzles with her power, and both sneaking past guards to avoid danger. Like SotC , the story gets deeper and more heart-rending as it goes on, being as eerily beautiful as its stunning art style. It induces a sense of wonder into everything that transpires in a game that more people need to check out.
The thing that people will surely remember the most about the PS2 is its intro screen. The mixture of white towers and colored fireflies make it easily the best opening sequence that I've seen, in any consoles to date. It even outclasses the PS3 orchestral intro and the cheesy Nintendo Gamecube opener. Like many, I thought that the console randomly created the white towers. However, this logic proved to be false.
Brave: The Search for Spirit Dancer suffered from the misfortune of releasing during a period when the industry had already moved on from 3D platformers (Blame GTA for that), so similarly to other gems like Vexx and Billy Hatcher, the game didn’t enjoy enough recognition. Brave: The Search for Spirit Dancer is a decent game where you play as a courageous kid who finds himself the hero of the story. He’ll embark on epic adventures, slaying wolves with his axe, acquiring Native American-inspired abilities, and slaying more wolves. The game has its own set of challenges, but it is still far from being peddled as one of the worst games.
