Hemimetabolism, or incomplete metamorphosis is a type where insects show only three developmental stages: egg, nymph and imago. Organisms undergo gradual changes and there is no pupal stage involved. Nymph, the second developmental stage, has a thin exoskeleton and largely resembles imago but does not have wings or reproductive organs.
They consume an enormous amount of food as larvae and store it all inside to prepare for the next stage of their life cycle. The larva surrounds it by weaving a cocoon, where it remains inert and without food. The pupa transforms into an adult during this stage, which is known as the pupal stage.
Viviparous animals give birth to young ones. All organisms mature, grow, and eventually become adults. But the process of “growing up” varies. Insects and most other invertebrates undergo a sequential transformation from young ones to adult. This process of a drastic change of a larva into an adult is called metamorphosis. This type of growth stages can be observed in many insects like butterflies, silkworms, cockroach, etc.
It is shedding or ecdysis in many invertebrates. Here, it refers to a manner in which an insect sheds its exoskeleton. This usually occurs during the larval stage. This moulting process can transform the larvae into reproductive adults with wings. The developmental stage between each moult and its sexually mature adult is termed as an instar.
The anatomy of a grasshopper is divided into head, thorax and abdomen. In the abdomen region, a large membrane called the Tympanum is present. It is known as the hearing organ of the grasshopper as it can pick up vibrations. Biologists have also noted that this organ shares many characteristics with a drum. The tympanum is located near the base of the hind legs.
Butterflies are cold-blooded insects that require external temperatures to create body temperature. In extremely cold temperatures, the butterfly spreads its wings on a leaf, pile of mud or rocks to acquire sufficient body heat.
