Knowing of another passage, Mímir instructs Kratos to behead him and have his head revived by the Witch of the Woods, whom, upon resurrection, he reveals to be the goddess Freya. Kratos's longstanding hatred of gods causes him to distrust her, but both Freya and Mímir warn him he must tell Atreus about his true nature. Kratos, Atreus, and Mímir are attacked by Modi and Magni. After Kratos kills Magni, Modi flees but later ambushes the trio. Kratos fends him off, but Atreus collapses, overcome by illness due to the contradiction of a god believing himself to be mortal. Freya instructs Kratos to retrieve the heart of a specific troll in Helheim; however, his frost-based Leviathan Axe is useless in the icy realm. Kratos returns home to unearth his old weapons, the fiery Blades of Chaos, and is haunted by Athena's spirit. After retrieving the heart, he has a haunting vision of Zeus. Freya revives Atreus, and Kratos tells him they are gods. Atreus becomes increasingly arrogant and, against Kratos's orders, murders a weakened Modi, who was beaten by Thor for not avenging Magni. At Midgard's peak, Kratos and Atreus are ambushed by Baldur, resulting in Jötunheim's portal being destroyed. Their battle descends to Týr's Temple, and the group ends up in Helheim.
Père et fils continuent leur quête jusqu'au lac des Neuf, où ils tombent sur Jörmungandr , le Serpent-monde. Examinant le temple de Týr , au centre du lac, ils se dirigent ensuite vers la montagne où ils rencontrent Sindri , le frère de Brok avec qui il est en froid. Continuant leur ascension, leur chemin est bloqué par une fumée noire impénétrable et la Sorcière des bois leur indique que seule la lumière d' Alfheim leur permettra de dissiper ce brouillard. Les guidant au temple de Týr, elle les accompagne à Alfheim, le royaume des elfes. Mais avant de pouvoir les aider davantage, elle est rappelée à Midgard par un sort. Se dirigeant vers la lumière, Kratos et Atreus sont témoins de la guerre que se livrent les elfes blancs et les elfes noirs . Ils libèrent la lumière du contrôle des elfes noirs et Kratos entre seul dans la lumière. Il y aperçoit des illusions avant d'en être tiré par Atreus. En sortant du temple, père et fils aperçoivent des elfes blancs entrer dans le temple avant d'être attaqués par Svartáljǫfurr, le roi des elfes noirs. Kratos le tue avant de retourner à Midgard avec Atreus.

At Midgard's peak, they are ambushed by Baldur. Atreus foolishly picks a fight with Baldur, who then proceeds to destroy the Portal to Jötunheim and throw the group into Helheim.
