Chikyū Bōeigun 4 , released overseas as Earth Defense Force 2025 , is the fourth main installment, developed by Sandlot for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 . It features four player online co-operative play. An updated port featuring cross-region multiplayer, Earth Defense Force : The Shadow of New Despair , was released for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in 2015, [ 7 ] [ 8 ] and a Nintendo Switch port was released in 2022. [ 9 ] It is a direct sequel to Earth Defense Force 2017 and follows the EDF's elite Storm Team during another war against a larger alien invasion in 2025.
Featuring tons of missions, making it the most ever seen in the series and the first to feature four-player multiplayer on home consoles, Earth Defense Force 2025 is an all-out battle against the terrifying ravagers that have come back stronger than ever in their mission to destroy the planet.

It is the follow-up to Earth Defense Force 2017. A remastered version, titled Earth Defense Force : The Shadow of New Despair, was released for PlayStation 4 and Windows in 2016, which includes the original game as well as a new expansion. A Nintendo Switch version was released in Japan in December 2022. A reboot titled Earth Defense Force 5 was released on December 7, 2017.
Slant Magazine gave the Xbox 360 version two-and-a-half stars out of five, saying that "Even though it tries so very hard to jam-pack a pick-up-and-play shooter with missions, weapons, and multiplayer options aplenty, it's a game that has limits to its staying power, leaving the player hungry for something more substantial." [ 31 ] However, the same magazine gave the PS4 version three stars out of five, saying that it "doesn't ever completely shy away from using filler material after successfully building so much momentum." [ 30 ]
Unlike earlier Sandlot games, EDF 2025 utilizes four classes, with a new record for the series of 788 weapons spread between them. Players have the ability to change armor colors for all classes. The four EDF soldier class divisions are:
