After his death, Djoser’s sarcophagus was placed inside the burial chamber, deep within the great step pyramid. Found alongside his remains were up to 40,000 stone urns. These vessels are inscribed with the names of the Pharaohs from the First and Second Dynasty, and continue to pose a mystery to modern archaeologists. Some speculate that they were designed to present Djoser’s reign as the culmination of Egyptian history.
The pyramid is made of limestone blocks, weighing an average of tons each, and covers an area of around 13 acres. It was originally around 146 meters tall, but it has since lost its peak, leaving it at around 138 meters tall.
Mathematical precision was key to these constructions, with ramps, pulleys, and wooden sleds employed to move limestone from quarries to the building site. New research, led by Xavier Landreau from the Palaeotechnical Research Institute of Paris, has uncovered more advanced techniques used in the construction of the Step Pyramid. His study suggests the existence of a dam, a water treatment system, and a hydraulic elevator, which may have been used to aid in lifting heavy materials during the building process. This also points to the ancient Egyptians’ understanding of hydraulic power, further elevating their reputation as master engineers. Additionally, contrary to common myths, the laborers who built these pyramids were not slaves, but skilled workers, much like those who would later construct the Pyramids of Giza.
