Les armées de Sauron ont attaqué Minas Tirith , la capitale de Gondor . Jamais ce royaume autrefois puissant n'a eu autant besoin de son roi. Mais Aragorn trouvera-t-il en lui la volonté d'accomplir sa destinée ? Tandis que Gandalf s'efforce de soutenir les forces brisées du Gondor, Théoden exhorte les guerriers de Rohan à se joindre au combat. Mais malgré leur courage et leur loyauté, les forces des Hommes ne sont pas de taille à lutter contre les innombrables légions d'ennemis qui s'abattent sur le royaume... Chaque victoire se paie d'immenses sacrifices. Malgré ses pertes, la Communauté se jette dans la bataille pour la vie, ses membres faisant tout pour détourner l'attention de Sauron afin de donner à Frodon une chance d'accomplir sa quête. Voyageant à travers les terres ennemies, ce dernier doit se reposer sur Samsagace Gamegie et Gollum, tandis que l'Anneau continue d'essayer de le corrompre...
La compagnie traverse l' Eregion déserte avant de tenter de franchir les Monts Brumeux (Montagnes de Brume) par le col enneigé du Caradhras. Après leur échec face aux éléments déchaînés, Gandalf conduit ses compagnons dans les mines de Moria , ancienne cité naine désormais peuplée par des gobelins, mais il tombe dans un gouffre en affrontant le Balrog , une antique créature démoniaque. La Communauté, désormais menée par Aragorn , quitte la Moria et entre dans le pays elfique de Lothlórien , gouverné par Celeborn et Galadriel . Frodon et Sam regardent dans le miroir de Galadriel et voient des visions du passé, du présent et d'un possible futur. Terrifié par l'Œil de Sauron, Frodon propose de remettre l'Anneau à Galadriel, mais celle-ci surmonte la tentation. Les compagnons quittent la Lórien, avec des présents donnés par les elfes, à bord de trois bateaux et descendent le grand fleuve Anduin . Arrivée à hauteur des chutes de Rauros, la Communauté se sépare après une attaque d'Orques et Frodon et Sam partent seuls en direction du Mordor .

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli enter the kingdom of Rohan . The Orcs are killed by Éomer 's riders of Rohan; Merry and Pippin escape into Fangorn Forest. Éomer gives Aragorn horses. In Fangorn, Aragorn's group meets a resurrected Gandalf. Gandalf leads them to Rohan's capital, Edoras ; Gandalf frees Théoden from Saruman's control. Théoden travels to Helm's Deep to defend against Saruman's army. In Fangorn, Merry and Pippin meet the Ent Treebeard . He takes them toward Isengard , where they see how Saruman has destroyed the forest. Enraged, the Ents storm Isengard, trapping Saruman in his tower.
Aragorn arrives at Helm's Deep. They fight off a night attack; at dawn, the Orc army is destroyed by the trees of Fangorn Forest.
Sauron sends a great army against Gondor . Gandalf arrives at Minas Tirith to warn Denethor of the attack, while Théoden musters the Riders of Rohan to go to Gondor's aid. Minas Tirith is besieged; the Lord of the Nazgûl uses a spell-wound battering ram to destroy the city's gates. Denethor, deceived by Sauron, falls into despair. He burns himself alive on a pyre; Pippin and Gandalf rescue his son Faramir from the same fate. Aragorn, accompanied by Legolas, Gimli, and the Rangers of the North , takes the Paths of the Dead to recruit the Dead Men of Dunharrow, oathbreakers who will have no rest until they fight for the King of Gondor. Aragorn unleashes the Army of the Dead on the Corsairs of Umbar invading southern Gondor. He and men of southern Gondor sail in the Corsairs' ships up the Anduin , reaching Minas Tirith just in time to turn the tide of battle. Théoden's niece Éowyn , who joined the army in disguise, kills the Lord of the Nazgûl with help from Merry; both are wounded. Gondor and Rohan defeat Sauron's army in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields , but Théoden is killed. Aragorn enters Minas Tirith and heals the sick. He leads an army through Ithilien to the Black Gate to distract Sauron from his true danger. At the Battle of the Morannon , his army is vastly outnumbered.
Peter Jackson commence à réaliser les storyboards avec Christian Rivers en août 1997 et compose une équipe chargée de recréer la Terre du Milieu à la même période [ 14 ] . Il charge Richard Taylor , collaborateur de longue date et responsable de Weta Workshop , de s'occuper de l'aspect de cinq éléments majeurs : les armures, les armes, les prothèses de maquillage, les créatures et les maquettes. En novembre 1997 , Alan Lee et John Howe , illustrateurs de nombreuses œuvres de Tolkien, rejoignent le projet [ 15 ] . L'aspect visuel des films est largement inspiré de leurs illustrations [ 16 ] . Le chef décorateur Grant Major est chargé de transformer les dessins de Lee et Howe en véritables décors, alors que Dan Hennah , le directeur artistique , organise les repérages des lieux de tournage et supervise les activités du département artistique.
