There is no seasonal breeding season for the giraffe. A Masai Giraffe can breed at the age of 4 years. About 50 to 75% of the calves die in their first few months due to predators. A single calf is born after a 14 – 15 month gestation period. The calf is 6 feet tall when born and grows rapidly. During the first month of its life it stays with its mother. After this period it will join a group of calves and will be looked after by a ‘babysitter’ cow. The calf will remain in this nursery for one year. Masai Giraffes have a life span of 25 – 30 years.
We envision a world where all giraffe can live wild and free within their historical ranges or habitats throughout Africa and are protected by the people around them.
Masai giraffes can suffer from giraffe skin disease, which is a disorder of unknown etiology that causes lesion on the forelimbs. This disorder is being further investigated to better understand mortality in this species. [ 21 ]
Masai Giraffes are browsers, feeding primarily on the leaves, twigs, and bark of thorny acacia and myrrh trees, extending their long necks and using their prehensile tongues to maneuver around the thorns. They can consume up to 75 lbs (34 kg) of foliage daily and go weeks without drinking, acquiring most of their water from their food.
The giraffe’s heart is a powerful organ, around 60 cm (24 inches) long and weighing approximately 11 kg (24 lbs), capable of generating double the blood pressure of most mammals. This is essential for pumping blood up the long neck to the brain. When giraffes lower their heads to drink, special valves prevent the sudden rush of blood from causing brain damage.
