The game includes four nameable human "heroes": the player character, the Hero, who is a teenage boy living with his mother in Kichijōji in Tokyo; the Heroine, who is the leader of a resistance force which tries to protect Tokyo; and the Law Hero and Chaos Hero, who represent the alignments "law" and "chaos", respectively. Among other characters are ambassador Thorman ( トールマン , Tōruman ) and general Gotou ( ゴトウ ) , who lead the United States military and the Japan Self-Defense Forces , respectively; the archangel Michael ( ミカエル , Mikaeru ) and the demon Asura-ou ( アスラおう ) , who lead the Order of Messiah and the Ring of Gaea, respectively; the demons Lilith ( リリス , Ririsu ) and Lucifer ( ルシファー , Rushifā ) , who use the pseudonyms Yuriko ( 由利子 ) and Louis Cyphre ( ルイ・サイファー , Rui Saifā ) ; and Stephen, the creator of the demon summoning program.
Upon their return from the Diamond Realm, they discover that 30 years have passed and that worldwide nuclear holocaust has occurred. Humans have survived, but the world has drastically changed, and demons roam freely. In Tokyo, particularly, two groups have risen from the remnants of the Martial Law forces and the Japanese Rebellion forces - the Messian Order and the Ring of Gaea .
Official Japanese material has often rendered Shin Megami Tensei in English as " Shin Digital Devil Story " or " Shin DDS ", though this is not a direct translation.
In addition to the main series, there are Shin Megami Tensei spin-off games. The first is Shin Megami Tensei If... , released in the same year and on the same system as Shin Megami Tensei II . [ 17 ] The second, Shin Megami Tensei: Nine , was released for the Xbox in 2002. [ 18 ] Originally designed as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), it was later split into a dual single-player and multiplayer package, and the single-player version released first. The online version was delayed and eventually cancelled as the developers could not manage the required online capacities using Xbox Live . [ 19 ] [ 20 ] A true MMORPG, Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine , was released for Microsoft Windows in 2007 in Japan, 2008 in North America, and 2009 in Europe. [ 21 ] [ 22 ] [ 23 ] Western service was terminated in 2014 when Marvelous USA , the game's then-handlers, shut down their PC Online game department. [ 24 ] Its Japanese service ended in May 2016. [ 25 ] A smartphone game, Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2 , was released in 2018. [ 26 ]
